At ReadWorks, we are excited to unveil a new guide designed to assist educators in evaluating how our resources supplement English Language Arts (ELA) curricula, particularly focusing on background knowledge. We credit the Knowledge Matters Campaign for laying the groundwork with their invaluable 8 key components of knowledge-building for K-8 curriculum evaluation, which inspired us to craft this comprehensive list. The educational landscape is undergoing significant transformations, with states such as California, New York, and Indiana taking substantial strides towards enhancing reading programs. California's shift towards a science-based reading approach has yielded positive results, and Governor Kathy Hochul's recent announcement of a science-based reading curriculum overhaul in New York by 2025 reflects a commitment to educational advancement. Additionally, Indiana has enacted a law mandating the use of science-backed reading teaching methods in schools. More than 15 states have evaluated their reading curricula, signaling a widespread recognition of the importance of evolving instruction methods. As part of the ReadWorks mission to provide free resources that contribute to improved reading comprehension, we are thrilled to provide this guide to translate the scientific principles of knowledge-building into useful classroom instruction. Leveraging the 8 key components from the Knowledge Matters K-8 curriculum evaluation tool, we’ve created this downloadable poster showing how ReadWorks can effectively supplement in each critical knowledge-building area.

Learn about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy and role in the Civil Rights Movement with ReadWorks' collection of passages.
Try out ReadWorks audio tools for all of our MLK Jr. Day texts as seen in the video below! While all of ReadWorks texts have text-to-speech, many have human-voice audio as an option for students to hear a text read aloud by a fluent reader. A teacher can assign audio to their whole class, groups of students, or individual students. With both text-to-speech and human-voice audio options, students can choose the playback speed, opting to slow down or speed up the audio.
RESEARCH SAYS Listening to texts read with prosody models fluent reading and also allows students to try a text that is more challenging than their independent reading skills. You can also provide audio to help your students read more challenging texts. A study found that students engaged with more challenging reading passages when they used ReadWorks digital support tools, including audio, than when they didn’t. Read more.
