Why Vocabulary?
Vocabulary knowledge is one of the strongest predictors of reading comprehension. If we don’t know the words we’re reading, we either stop comprehending or we stop reading.
Deep vocabulary knowledge is developed by repeatedly exploring a word within rich contexts. Just two additional reviews double the likelihood that a student will learn a word.

How to Grow Vocabularies with ReadWorks
All of ReadWorks vocabulary words are hand-selected with a focus on adding critical Tier 2 and Tier 3 words to students’ vocabulary. Students repeatedly explore each word through our interactive activities and the rich content, provided by our partner Wordsmyth, of our vocabulary widget -- all within the context of their reading.
ReadWorks interactive vocabulary activities allow students to explore and play with key vocabulary words, promoting students’ active learning and interest in words. As they complete the interactive activities, students see the vocabulary multiple times and in multiple contexts, increasing the likelihood of students remembering the words in the future. The activities are also ungraded and self-correcting to encourage continual exploration.
Meaning Mapper is a brief, teacher-led activity for helping students build connections among words each day of the Article-A-Day routine. Start Meaning Mapper at the beginning of the week and finish it by the end!
Word Detective is a 15-minute, teacher-led investigation of word parts designed for the last day of the Article-A-Day routine. With this simple, fun activity, students develop deeper vocabulary understanding. |
How to Differentiate for Your Students
The vocabulary widget is an automatically differentiated experience for students. The widget provides human-voice audio pronunciation of the words, images, student-friendly definitions, and translations into Spanish and Mandarin.
The interactive vocabulary activities are designed to support all learners in two research-based ways. First, because these interactive vocabulary activities are self-correcting, students can explore, learn, and practice using these words at their own pace, taking as long as they need. They can also click the “reset” button to redo any of the activities for additional practice.
