A Literacy Initiative Group (ALIG Society) is an NGO based in India working to bring a positive change to the lives of students. In January 2020, ALIG Society partnered with the Orient Girls School in Kolkata to support 160 7th -10th grade students by training them in edtech programs like ReadWorks to improve reading comprehension and digital skills. In March, when India imposed a nationwide lockdown in response to the pandemic, the ALIG Society lost contact with some of the most vulnerable students. While some children were able to access online assignments at home - others were left with no way to complete work. In September, learning fully resumed, this time remotely, when students were provided with tablets and smartphones, along with training on how to use their new devices. In their new remote learning model, teachers continue to use ReadWorks to complement the curriculum. With ReadWorks, teachers can check on assignment progress, grade, and give feedback to students—making contact with students easier. “We have observed a massive improvement in the English reading, speaking, and understanding abilities of the students after their exposure to ReadWorks curriculum, which is fun and comprehensive.” The ALIG Society shared, “We also conduct an activity wherein our students interact with a group of American students who are interning with our funding agency - Rayse Academy. Through this interaction, students discuss their favorite ReadWorks articles and this helps the students to come out of their shells and enhance their communication skills." By offering thousands of reading passages and research-based supports online for free, ReadWorks makes it possible for students to keep reading and growing in diverse learning environments across the US and the world.
Because of continued remote and hybrid learning, demand for ReadWorks free materials is higher than ever. We rely on help from people like you to meet this need. If you are able, please give today. To learn more about the ALIG Society’s pilot program, see their post here.
