Updates from ReadWorks
Launch of 2024 Audio Drive
The YPC will once again host our annual spring audio drive, giving your networks the opportunity to virtually volunteer for ReadWorks! The landing page can be found here and we have put together sample language to share on social or through email. Please feel free to get creative and make changes to these examples!
The audio drive will take place from Monday, March 11th - April 15th, 2024. With 144 passages, we're asking each member to recruit between 6 and 10 volunteers to participate in the drive.
ReadWorks welcomes LaDarrien Gillette as Development Manager
LaDarrien earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies from Spelman College and a Master of Arts in International Law from Emory University. Before joining ReadWorks, as Senior Program Manager at CARE, LaDarrien oversaw the Innovation Hub, a physical space that leases space to nonprofits with similar missions, hosts events, and pilots domestic programs focused on strengthening emergency response in the US Gulf Coast. LaDarrien is excited to bring her community engagement, fundraising, and relationship management skills to ReadWorks to ensure teachers and parents have access to educational resources, and students can build their reading skills, one lesson at a time.
Later this year, LaDarrien will begin serving as the liaison between ReadWorks and the Young Professionals Council.
Spring Virtual Event
We are working to put together a spring virtual event, with trivia being the event category that garnered the most interest in our March 2024 meeting. Be on the lookout for more information coming soon over email!

fall 2023 updates
2023 Illustration Contest Launched!
This October we officially announced our 2023 National Illustration Contest. This year, we’re asking 5th-8th graders to submit drawings for one installment of the Our Family Ghost series for Halloween. Submissions will be due on November 10th, 2023 and we’ll be in touch about this year’s judging contest, with the goal being to finalize a winner at our December YPC meeting.
Coffee Chat Opportunity
To better connect members of the YPC with our staff, we're inviting folks to be matched with a staff member for a 30-minute, informal call. Calls will be scheduled at times that work best for both YPC members and ReadWorks staff members, so this will be a flexible and great opportunity to meet people you may have not talked to before on our team! If you’re interested in being matched with a staff member, please fill out this quick form.
A Thank You Gift from ReadWorks
We’d love to send out some ReadWorks goodies this year to YPC members as a small way of saying thank you for your support. Please reply to this email or email us directly ([email protected], [email protected]) to let us know what address you’d prefer us to use for shipping something later this year!
ReadWorks Advisory Council Meeting
The ReadWorks Advisory Council members serve as ReadWorks ambassadors and meet twice a year to hear updates from ReadWorks. Our next meeting will be Thursday, November 16th, 12:00-12:45 PM ET. This will be an update on our work here so far for the year and some upcoming plans, so we’re opening the invite to include others in the ReadWorks community who may be interested in joining. Be on the lookout for a calendar invite!
Refreshed DEI Statement
ReadWorks’ DEI Committee has just published our revised DEI statement to share our progress across departments on our DEI initiatives. We’ve added hyperlinks throughout the statement for deeper dives into some of those initiatives if you’d like to explore them!

summer 2023 updates
- Our annual report is out now!
- We launched our kindergarten and first-grade decodable texts! This Scope & Sequence aligns with the widely used Fundations curriculum and is now available for free to all ReadWorks users. We are currently seeking funding for our upcoming second-grade offering.
- Our recommendation engine project that is designed to bring students to grade-level reading is underway, with our first phase launched in February.
- We have a brand new homepage! While this might seem like a smaller update, it has long been on our wishlist so we can make sure every type of educator (classroom teachers, administrators, tutors, etc) are able to navigate the website in a way that makes sense for them. This is a big first step towards that goal. In addition, it opens up a lot of real estate for us to share news and new products with educators.
- We a partnering this quarter with Veronica Beard Gives Back and will be hosting in-store events in September at their store locations throughout the country. If you’re interested in volunteering to share our story in a Veronica Beard store near you, please reply to this email and let us know. Volunteer hosts get some great perks!
