How To Do The Article-A-Day Daily Routine
STEP 1: Set the purpose for the routine. "Words are where humans store knowledge. So we will build our knowledge by reading these articles. We will also increase our vocabulary, improve our reading stamina, and enjoy reading every day."
STEP 2: Students read or listen to an article. ReadWorks has curated weekly sets of nonfiction articles. All of the articles for the week are related by topic. If students cannot read independently, they can listen to the audio or you can read the article aloud.
STEP 3: The Book of Knowledge. Students write or type two or three things that they learned from the article and would like to remember in their Books of Knowledge. If students cannot write yet, they can draw their responses.
STEP 4: Share knowledge! Simply ask a few students to share what they learned from reading. Record this info in your Class Book of Knowledge.

support english language learners
For Article-A-Day assignments and the Reading Mindset Snapshot, a teacher can turn on ELL and Extra Supports in Class Admin, and individual students will always receive:
- The directions for Article-A-Day translated and read aloud by a fluent reader in the language you set for them (including English) and sentence frames in the Book of Knowledge.
- The Reading Mindset Snapshot translated and read aloud by a fluent reader in the language you set for them (including English).
- English audio versions of every text.
turn on audio for students
While all of ReadWorks texts have text-to-speech, many have human-voice audio as an option for students to hear a text read aloud by a fluent reader. An educator can assign audio to their whole class, groups of students, or individual students. Then students can choose whether or not they use the human-voice audio.
With both text-to-speech and human-voice audio options, students can choose the playback speed, opting to slow down or speed up the audio.
