Thank you, Kathy!
This summer, longtime ReadWorks leader Kathy Bloomfield will be retiring after 10+ years of working to support educators and students across the nation. Currently serving as our Chief Operating Officer, Kathy has worn many hats at our organization, including Interim Executive Director, and was a key part of the organization's launch.
To celebrate Kathy’s incredible accomplishments at ReadWorks and to thank her for her leadership, ReadWorks has created the Kabloomy Fund dedicated to supporting the creation of decodable texts, teacher guidance, and supports for early learners launching this fall. As a former second-grade teacher, this new ReadWorks project holds a special place in Kathy’s heart and to our entire team. |
Decodable Texts Project
For beginning readers, our current resources are a piece of the puzzle for what they need to effectively learn and practice how to read. Our K-1 library includes knowledge-building texts that are written at a listening-level comprehension so students can build background knowledge through their listening comprehension skills. The science of reading makes clear that these learners also need texts where they can repeatedly practice applying their decoding skills from their phonics lessons, which is both a gap in our library and in the greater marketplace.
Using the topics in our Article-A-Day Scope & Sequence, ReadWorks is creating new, rich decodable texts for beginning readers to practice decoding while also building knowledge in a cohesive, structured manner.
Each new decodable will be hand-curated to pair with existing listening-level texts in our library. In the classroom, students will practice applying their phonics skills while also building their listening comprehension through the paired texts and practicing their foundational reading skills. This repetition is valuable for retention since students will read the decodable text and hear a similar but more complex version aloud.
