Last Halloween, 808,104 middle schoolers were possessed by the zombie cliffhanger series The Run.
Students begged their teachers to keep reading, they predicted how it would end, and they even threw parties to celebrate the publication of the final installment.
But some students and teachers weren’t exactly pleased by the ending:

Step 1: READ
Have your students read the The Run series.
There are 7 installments in this spooky and thrilling zombie story. You can choose to have them read the ReadWorks ending “End of the Road” before OR after they’ve written their own endings.

Step 2: WRITE
Introduce the writing contest to your students.
Students must logically and creatively, complete an alternate ending for the series in under 800 words.
One story will be selected by our panel of judges to be published on ReadWorks with attribution to the author.
An honorable mention will be selected for each grade level 5th - 8th, and those stories will be published on the ReadWorks blog.
To create a story for publication, students must follow the guidelines here.

1. Make sure your students' stories follow all the guidelines laid out here
2. Submit your students’ stories to ReadWorks by dragging and dropping them into this Google Drive uploader
3. Teachers may submit multiple students’ stories with each story saved as an individual PDF
No stories will be accepted for judging after November 1st, 2019.
ReadWorks has assembled a panel of expert judges to pick the winning story. The winner will be announced on December 8th, 2019 (moved from December 1st to accommodate overwhelming submission).
The winning student's story will be published with attribution on ReadWorks.org. The winner will also receive a certificate and be featured on the ReadWorks blog.
